Womengineering Day 2008

The Hampton Roads (HR) Section of the Society of Women Engineers joined Old Dominion University (ODU) in its annual Womengineering Day on February 16, 2008. In this program ODU and industry partners promoted the engineering industry to young girls and women.  The participants attended a panel discussion composed of current students, faculty and industry partners.  The focus of the panel is to exposing young students to the journeys that the panel participants have taken in engineering and technology.

The program also featured hands on activities and design contests.  The SWE HR, SWE ODU and ODU engineering students ran sessions on “How water is cleaned”.  In the session the water filtration process is explained, the participants build a filter and pour dirty water through their filter to see how water is cleaned.

The keynote speaker for the luncheon was SWE Past National President Roberta Gleiter a Consulting Engineer for The Aerospace Corporation and CEO of Global Institute for Technology & Engineering. Roberta's personal mission is to establish engineering as a highly desirable career aspiration by actively reaching out to both female and male students.   Roberta was a dynamic speaker that explained how engineering touches the lives of the students every day by explaining what parts of an ink pen may have been developed by an engineer. A diner was held for Roberta Gleiter that evening that was attended by members of the ODU College Advisory Board, Society of Women Engineers, industry partners and ODU students.
